Make a Black Widow Spider for Halloween

While working with his dad in the garden, Teddy has come across quite a few Black Widow Spiders. While they are poisonous, we have learned not to freak out when we see one… we are scared of them and move away from where they are and know NOT to bother them.

So, when I suggested we make something ‘scary’ for Halloween, Teddy immediately said… “Let’s make a Black Widow!”

I searched our craft cupboard and this is what we came up with… a very ‘un-scary’ Black Widow… in fact, she’s rather cute!

All we needed to make her was;

  • a wooden half round (from a craft store)
  • black floral wire (from a craft store)
  • black paint and a paintbrush
  • googly eyes
  • my hot glue gun (any glue will also work too)

Teddy painted the wooden half round black.

Waiting for the paint to dry was rather a bother… blowing on the wet paint seemed to make it dry faster :-)

Then he painted the underside of the spider and added red dots like on the Black Widows he has seen in the garden.

Cut 4 pieces of the floral wire to the right length.

With the hot glue gun, stick the legs in place.

Bend the wire to make creepy spider legs.

Ha ha… Teddy’s leg kept looking at him!

Stick the googly eyes in place and Voila! A very un-scary Black Widow.

What Halloween crafting have you been up to this year?

Blessings and magic,

Donni

  1. Oh my goodness! I don’t know how you let the children outside with black widow spiders!! I would have us barricaded inside :) But my own terror of spiders wouldn’t help that. I’m so glad here in Ontario we have very little to worry about (no spiders or snakes, etc). My main concern are the too-bold coyotes that hand around the fields, but my husband usually chases them off before I even see them.

But you are right, that is a very un-scary spider. She’s down right cute.

    1. I know, Paula… it’s taken years! They keep to themselves though. And, the kids know to leave them alone. Now Coyotes… that would scare me, lol.
