Let’s Make a Colorful Heart Garland

Kitty was determined to bring happy color into the Sunny House today. She made such a beautiful paper heart garland using one of her previously painted watercolor paintings, yarn and  a heart punch. I love watching her come up with her own designs. For years, it was me who directed our crafting… now it is Kitty. It makes a mom proud.

When she had punched hearts of many different colors from her watercolor painting, she punched holes in each heart and threaded them onto her hand-dyed (by her at last  year’s summer camp) cotton yarn. At first, the yarn frayed and it was difficult for her to get it through the small holes in the hearts. I watched her struggle and get frustrated … I braced myself as she threw down her partially made garland. She sat still for a moment. Then, quietly, she fetched the scotch tape, cut a small piece and wrapped it around the end of her yarn. She cut the end diagonally into a sharp point. Problem solved! The tape helped her thread her yarn beautifully. Creative thinking at it’s best.

We hung her garland above the fireplace. It looks wonderful.

  1. I love this Donni. Can’t wait to try this at home!
I have also dipped the ends of yarn and string in melted beeswax (that pools in a candle). While it is still warm and pliable on the end of the yarn, you can pinch it into a point and it is almost as good as a needle.

    • What a brilliant idea, Sheila. We love crafting with a candle… it adds to the warm and cozy feeling – and now we have a practical use for crafting with a candle too. Thanks for sharing.
If you make a heart garland, I’d love to see it.
      Blessing and magic,
      Donni

  2. Where does one find a heart punch? I think my girls would love this, especially since they get so frustrated cutting out hearts!

    • Hi Trace,
We found ours at Michaels. If you Google ‘heart die cut’ I’m sure you’ll find lots of online sources too. I’d love to see a photo of your garland if you make one :-)
      Blessings and magic,
      Donni

    • Joann’s might have one too.

  3. I found one just like yours on Amazon! Thank you!
