Make Pretty Pom Pom Flowers for Valentine’s Day

We found the prettiest yarn at the craft shop today… gorgeous valentine colors. We decided we just HAD to have it to make flowers for Valentine’s Day. Are they not wonderful?!

Also, do you see the drawing of the mustang Kate drew? It’s in pencil and is so totally amazing that I made her sign it and have framed it. It’s exciting to see her talent unfold.

To make the pom poms, find something round in your home that has the diameter you want your pom pom flowers to be.

And something else round for the center too, quite a lot smaller.

We used a canning jar lid and a glitter tub lid.

Draw two circles on a piece of cardboard for the pom pom form.

Cut along the lines, making a wedge to facilitate cutting the inside circle out. I always make a wedge in my pom pom forms to help at the wrapping stage.

Make two pom pom forms.

To make the flowers, put the two cardboard forms together and sandwich a length of yarn between them. We will use this length to tie our pom pom together at the end.

Wrap yarn liberally around the cardboard pom pom form.

When you are ready, use sharp scissors to cut the yarn pom pom free. Your scissors will slide between the two pieces of cardboard.

Use the two extruding pieces of yarn (that you sandwiched between the cardboard before) to tie your pom pom in place.

If your pom pom isn’t perfectly round, don’t fret. Just trim it with your scissors until it is perfectly round.

Now, find a few sticks from outside and, with a little glue, stick them each into a pom pom.

Our flowers brighten up our windowsill.

Happy Valentine crafting.

Blessings and magic,

  1. This is a fantastic idea, thanks so much! And different to how I’ve made pom poms before, I’ll be trying this way for sure. Your daughter is an AMAZING artist! That drawing is spectacular.

    1. Hi Marnie,
This is the easiest way I’ve found. Especially for kids as they don’t have to thread the yarn through the center of the cardboard form, which gets tedious. We could use those little plastic pom pom thingies… but I like to let the kids know that they can make stuff from scratch.
Let me know how they work out for you :-)

  2. I loved this idea so much we made some flowers of our own. They look amazing on the mantle and as an added bonus, we had a blast making them! Thank you for sharing your projects (we also made the yarn wrapped sticks. What a soothing way to spend our wind-down evening hour).

    1. Hi Misty. So glad you made some wool flowers. Seriously… they are my new obsession :-) I’d love to see a photo of yours.

  3. I did so many of those growing up but totally forgot how. I just thought about doing this with my young girl and was about to look for instructions when I found this. Thanks so much! I know she will love it. You web site is beautiful.

  4. I remember making these as a kid! It was so fun, and amazing to think that I could create something so neat just by wrapping yarn. Now I have kids of my own, and I say it’s time to pass along the tradition! I never, ever, thought of making them into “flowers” by using found sticks — that is an amazing idea. Your site is so beautiful and inspiring, thank you for sharing such lovely projects! :)

    1. Thanks for your kind words, Melissa. One of my favorite parts about being a parent is being able to pass on the special traditions I had as a child and seeing my children feel about special things we do, the way I felt as a child. It’s profound :-)
Your site is totally wonderful… your words are like poetry.
