Traditions and daily rhythms have such a calming effect on our lives, not only for our children, but for ourselves too. My good man and I have a morning tradition that has made the early mornings my favorite time of the day.

Our littlest, Teddy, wakes up a 5.30 am. Pick yourself up from your faint! I agree… it is far too early… but, try as I may, I have not been able to get him to sleep longer. I have tried all the tricks in the book… ALL OF THEM. But to no avail. The only thing that has helped me, is to accept the fact that we wake up in the Sunny House at 5.30am!

Since accepting this wake-up time a few years ago, I can’t tell you enough what a gift the early morning has become. It is so beautiful to watch the sky change colors as the light enters the day, to hear the birds in their morning-song and breath in the cool dawn air.

I make coffee and call my Good Man downstairs. We take our steaming cups outside and enjoy our delicious coffee under the avocado tree in the garden. Sometimes we talk, make our plans, share our dreams. Sometimes we are silent as we watch the goings-on around us.

There are hummingbirds to see. And the bunnies are so funny as they go about their morning chores. At some point, the kids join us outside too and our day starts slowly.

Now, knowing what a gift the early morning is, I wouldn’t give up our our dawn risings for all the tea in China. They are my favorite moments in our days.

Here’s a snapshot of today’s early morning at the Sunny House…

  1. Beautiful beautiful bunny pics. The felicia have grown. Is that your own humming bird.
Why do we always want to stay sleeping in the best time of day. It’s still before the wind gets up and the water is glass. It’s beautiful. Anyway you can sleep all you want when you get old only you can’t sleep because you’re old. You can’t win.
