Vacation Time :: Portland, Oregon

As many of you know, we are longing to relocate our family from the hustle and bustle of our megatropolis city to a more rural, nature-infused lifestyle. This week past, we traveled to Portland, Oregon, to see if our spirits could connect with the city and surroundings. Boy, did they connect! They intertwined with beautyIf you want to read more…click here

Treasures We Found in Nature

We spent Saturday at Medrona Marsh, in Torrance, CA. Such beautiful treasures to be found. But, first, a game of rugby in the parking lot.     And then, cacti to admire.     We discovered that if you caress them, gently, they won’t hurt you, not one little bit (his nails are now cutIf you want to read more…click here

Nature is an antidote to stress.

The crazy holiday season has begun in earnest and life at The Sunny House is hectic as we try to juggle work and kids and family affairs. It’s a fun time of year with parties and celebrations… but it can be stressful too as rhythms change and out-of-the-ordinary events occur much more often than usual. If you want to read more…click here

Giving Thanks

Are you wearing a red poppy today? I am. Here’s my granddad, Norman, and me when I was a baby. I loved to feed his pigs with him.     He was a prisoner of war in WW2… for FOUR years. I think of him and my other granddad, North Wells, who also fought inIf you want to read more…click here

An Autum Nature Walk

We don’t get much day-to-day fall here in Southern California. But we have a special, magical, nearby place that we go to often. Where the seasons are surprisingly prominent… dew collects on the grasses and light shines golden like magic. It’s an hour’s drive away but, always, so worth the trip.     I knowIf you want to read more…click here

Fun in Massachusetts : Family Vacation Time!

I’m excited to share more photos from our recent family vacation to Maine and Massachusetts. I’ve shared all about Maine and here is what we discovered in Mass. The MOST amazing roadside farm stands. EVERYWHERE! Mostly organic! We feasted on delicious, locally grown fruit and vegetables. The tomatoes!! Oh gosh… they were a phenomenon! WeIf you want to read more…click here

The Enchanting Fairy Houses of Mackworth Island, Maine.

One of our favorite places in all of Maine was a place called Mackworth Island. It is a little island off the coast of Maine, connected to the mainland by a small bridge… if you didn’t know it was there, you’d quite miss it. The island is covered in thousands of the most majestic treesIf you want to read more…click here

Maine Island Life.

Our friends in Maine live in South Portland but they also have a summer house on an island in Casco Bay… Long Island, Maine. They spend the whole glorious summer there. Three beautiful sunny months. They are SO lucky. The island is a one and a half hour ferry ride away from Portland. There areIf you want to read more…click here

Vacation Time : Maine!

We have had a most magical 2 week family vacation in Maine and Massachusetts . Although we have been in the USA for 14 years, we haven’t traveled around this beautiful country much. My Good Man comes from New Zealand and I come from South Africa, so, whenever we’ve been able to save up enough moneyIf you want to read more…click here

California Dreaming

We had a glorious morning surfing. We got to the beach early when our shadows were long and the gulls were warming their cold night feathers in the early morning glow from the sun. The new sky was impossibly blue and the water was warm and inviting. Kitty is a cautious surfer and prefers notIf you want to read more…click here

Summer Days

Our last month of summer is going by so fast.  We’ve been letting the days languish, enjoying little chores around the house, getting to those things we’ve been meaning to get to. Kitty spent a day ‘mending’ her horses. She has collected quite a few over the years. We call it her ‘garage sale luck’If you want to read more…click here

Portraits of Summer

I love this part of the summer vacation. Two months down and one to go and we have finally settled into our summer rhythm, at last! We’ve been through so many phases… the ‘there’s NOTHING to do‘ phase, the ‘begging to play games on the phone‘ phase and the ‘who is coming to play today?’If you want to read more…click here

Portraits of Life in the Sunny House

A few mornings ago, I found Teddy sitting on the comfy couch in my room, playing “Kind Hearts in the Garden” on his recorder. The morning sun was streaming in through the window and kissing him. His shadow danced and played on the wall behind him. It looked and sounded so beautiful and touched myIf you want to read more…click here

My Girl

On Friday evenings, My Good Man and Teddy go to soccer practice and Kitty and I have fallen into the lovely routine spending some time together, just the two of us. We wander around a park, admiring the flowers and then find a little low-key restaurant that has food we both love. We chose ItalianIf you want to read more…click here

In Gratutude (and Happiness)

I’ve been listening to Ted Talks while I work. Wow!! There are some incredible people in this glorious world. I have learned SO much! Here’s something BIG… the more grateful you are, the happier you will be.     You would think it was the other way around, wouldn’t you… that you become grateful becauseIf you want to read more…click here

Days of Wonder

Kitty received a wonderful book from her Godfather for Christmas. It’s called “365 Days of Wonder”. Each day a new quote for us to read to each other and ponder. We’ve come to the conclusion that it’s right… there are indeed 365 days of wonder in the year and that little daily things are, inIf you want to read more…click here

Portraits of Us : Week 24

We are having a family painting day today. Kitty and I found this amazing magical coloring sheet that opens up into a long scene for us to color. We are using watercolor. And all of us are adding our own special magic. It’s starting to look so beautiful…   When it’s done, we will hangIf you want to read more…click here

Portraits of Us : Week 23

Our summer vacation has come to an end. Oh Boy, has it been a hot week here at The Sunny House… sometimes you just have to make your own rain to dance in. And, sometimes, there’s no one to play with… so playing with the dog will do just fine. Kitty and I came toIf you want to read more…click here

Portraits of Us : WEEK 22

There have been fantastical imaginings in the Sunny House. Dragons and dragon eggs have been a big feature. We scour the landscape in search of dragon eggs… our collections are getting quite big. And, we’ve been pirates too. And cowboys. And pirate cowboys…   Summer is so much fun! To help me cherish every littleIf you want to read more…click here

Portraits of Us : Week 18

I love watching the friendship between my children grow. As they get older, they seem to have more in common. Kitty protects Teddy, fiercely. And in return, Teddy looks up to Kitty like she IS  the goddess she is. They fight too, of course. They irritate and tease and get grumpy with each other likeIf you want to read more…click here

Portraits of Us : Week 17

Teddy Bear lost another tooth this week. He put it on his bedside table for the tooth fairy and, in the morning, a gorgeous gold and silver glittering crystal was in its place. “Good trade!” he declared.     To help me cherish every little moment, I post a portrait of us each week. There’s a Pokemon Craze going on at The Sunny House. Which is funny because, until a few days ago, my children never knew something called ‘Pokemon’ ever existed. Sunday’s at the Sunny House. Reading for hours when we come home from the library with new books. Making bejeweled castles from Teddy’s awesome new Birthday blocks. A happy game of pick-up-sticks. This week’s memories : I caught Teddy in his ‘Teddy-stare’. He thinks like this, a lot. Protraits Of Us : 1

Time passes too quickly. I passed a mother who was hugging her toddler the other day. She held him tightly to her and he fitted into her body as only a toddler can.  He was pressing his cheek against hers and she had his sweet curly hair in her hands.
