Needle Felted Pirate.

I wonder how the millions of families who live in thick winter cope with being cooped up inside for so long. Here in Southern California, we are very spoilt and a day inside is quite a challenge. I suppose we struggle so much because it is so rare… we never get into an inside groove and are not very prepared when one happens. We have been stuck inside, and not even continuously, for two days and are so delighted that the rain has passed and we can look forward to a sunny day tomorrow. Don’t think we didn’t enjoy the rain… we loved it and made the most of it. When the rain abated for a couple of hours, we put on our raincoats and boots and went puddle jumping (apparently, puddle jumping does not seem like a silly idea to a child, even if they have snotty noses!) K and T found an especially deep puddle that covered their feet completely. They jumped and splashed with abandon. Then K stopped, looked up at me (wincing at how wet they were getting) and asked why parents don’t splash in puddles? I couldn’t think of a reasonable answer and so asked her to ask her dad, at which he jumped, to my utter surprise, into the puddle, starting an hour of ‘family splashing’. It was delightful, so childish, so naughty, so silly. We jumped and splashed and laughed and bonded. We were freezing afterwards and ended the fun with a ‘family bath’.

When the rain started again, T, as usual, was fascinated with the ‘waaaaata’ falling from the sky. He watched it for hours. Here is a photo of him and A Good Man watching the big drops splashing upon the deck.

When he wasn’t watching the rain outside, he was in his ‘space’, as K called his box. He collected a few of his favourite toys and retired in comfort, not to be disturbed.

K and T built a ‘club house’ with the story blanket but T thought he was playing the part of the Big Bad Wolf and kept huffing and puffing and blowing K’s club house down which frustrated her no end. So she built him a little house all for himself but then couldn’t stay away from him for long… sisterly love, we call it.

K, happy to have her club house all to herself.

My water pitcher was half filled with all the rain we had. I spent the hours inside deflecting frustrations and felting, of course. Here are the easter eggs I wet felted drying in the post rainstorm sun… gotta love California.
I did get to some serious felting… here he is, my pirate. He has a skull and crossbones scarf hat, a patch over his eye, a striped shirt and bare feet, complete with toes. We named him John Starling from the pirate ship, The Rainbow Clam.

K couldn’t resist a play,

and set up a feast fit for a pirate. She is devastated that I have added him to my Etsy shop and I have had to promise her to make another, just the same.

Apparently, pirates DO like flowers on the table.

I loved the story about your whole family puddle jumping together. What a lovely thing to do and a lovely memory you will have. :)
