The Twice Caught Fish. - The Magic Onions

The Twice Caught Fish.

T and K, in this photo I am 7 and my brother, Ali, is 4. It was taken on a family fishing holiday at St Lucia Bay in Northern Natal, South Africa. We fished for days. Before setting out each day, we’d buy a few containers of prawns to use as bait from the little, barefoot, african boys at the jetty. We would fish with the prawns all day long and, at night, my mom (your granny) would fry, in garlic and butter, the fish we had caught that day and the left over bait prawns… they were delicious! It was on this day that this photo was taken that Ali and I caught the same fish… can you believe, the same fish at the same time! The prawns must have been good as the fish ate the one at the end of Ali’s line and then went straight to mine and ate it too! We called it our ‘together’ fish and my dad said that he had never heard of it happening before! That was something!!

Your dad and I are going to take you two on a fishing holiday this summer too and I know you’ll remember the fun we have like I remember the fun my family had all those years ago. I’m sure well get a photo of the two of you just like that photo of Ali and me so that you’ll be able to remember the stories we make.
Blessings and magic to you, my two sweet precious gifts.

  3. I cherish my photos and memories of my siblings when we were children…what a special, unique, and often fleeting relationship. I love to watch my kids interacting with each other and wonder what their relationship will be when they’re grown. Hopefully their joint joyful childhood will keep them all close…

  8. You are so lucky to have had a sibling to share your childhood with! I was an only child, (with a step brother who was much much older than me)…it’s fun though, to see that sibling magic happening with my two little girls!
Hopefully they will be the beginning of that sibling magic!!

  10. What an awesome trip that must have been, and I hope your upcoming trip is fantastic. I remember fishing with my dad and brother, and bringing our catch home to mom, who was great at removing all the bones. Yum.

  11. How wonderful! My Dad used to take me and my sis fishing and we used to love it and now my son loves it too. Even if you don’t catch anything just sitting there watching the water is so relaxing.

  12. Brought back memories for me. I spend most of my youth in Richards Bay. We went to St. Lucia a few times, my uncle used to rent a cabin. Beautiful wild beaches. Fresh fish, crabs and prawns with lots of garlic and butter…lots of crocodiles and hippos to:). A beautiful country.

  13. 15 things that can kill you in those waters… can you get them…. very fond memories! Can’t wait until holidays, only a few more weeks….
    Love ali
