When I told my friend that we were getting ready to do some leaf rubbings,  she shared a little secret with me… leaf rubbings look even more gorgeous if you do them on paper that has been painted with watercolors first. This sounded so lovely to us that we just had to give it a try. But first, we scouted our neighborhood for lovely big fallen leaves.

At the end of each year, Teddy and Kitty come home from their Waldorf school with pages and pages of beautiful watercolor paintings. I keep them safely to use throughout the year as ‘thank you’ cards and gift tags… and now, leaf rubbings too!

We chose a few favorite leaves for our rubbing.

We set the leaf on a hard surface, put the watercolor paper over the leaf and rubbed hard with a block crayon.

How exciting it was to see the outline of the leaf reveal itself onto our painting… and the veins too! Autumn magic at work!

The harder we rubbed (being careful not to move the leaf below the paper) the more beautiful our leaf rubbings became.

We punched holes in each rubbing and thread them with yarn so that we could hang them from our staircase. They are the first thing that greets us as we enter the Sunny House – beautiful, bright Autumn!

While Teddy was making the leaf rubbings, Kitty made leaf fairies.

What is your favorite leaf craft?

Blessings and magic,

Donni

  1. We really like to do leaf rubbings on white paper with white crayons. You can then paint with watercolours, creating a wax resite. Cut out the leaf shapes, they are quite lovely1
