Handmade Valentine’s Day Gift : Heart Necklace

Being a mom… what a gift it is! There are so many heart-melting moments.  I am in the middle of a 6 week Simplicity Parenting class and what a gift this has been too! It has reminded me to slow down, be present in all the little things that happen each day and see them for the treasures they are.

Like making Kitty a Valentine gift with Teddy. His eagerness to show Kitty how much he loves her was one of these heart melting moments. He was so eager to show her, in fact, that he just couldn’t wait until Valentines Day to give her his little handmade treasure and he presented it to her the moment she came home from school. She was truly touched by this unexpected gift. They hugged and their eyes sparkled and it was as if I could visibly see their sibling bond strengthen. What a beautiful moment it was.

Isn’t it a pretty heart necklace Teddy made?

To make it we needed:

* Clay – we used Sculpey but playdough will work just as well (here’s a recipe to our playdough recipe)

* Wax paper

* A rolling pin

* A heart cookie cutter

* Small alphabet stamps

* Some pretty ribbon

We set the wax paper on the table and Teddy rolled the clay flat.

He pressed out a heart shape from the flat clay using the cookie cutter.

Then I helped him to stamp the impressions of Kitty’s name into the clay heart.

We used a small stick to make a hole in the top of the heart and then popped it into the oven at a low heat for 20 minutes.

When it was set hard from the oven, we cut a length of ribbon and threaded it through the hole in the heart and Teddy hung it around his sisters neck.

She has worn it for three days straight. And I have, more than once, seen Teddy look at it around her neck and smile inwardly.

Love truly is a beautiful thing!

Blessings and magic,

Donni

  1. Just wondering about the Peaceful Parenting class you are taking. Is that something local to you or perhaps something online. I would be interested in a class like that. Thank you.

    1. Hi Tara,
      I’ve asked the wonderful leader of our Simplicity Parenting class to send you a link to find a class in your area.

  2. I love it when I see my children give of themselves to their siblings, whether it is a quick hug when they are upset or finding a lost item, I feel blessed to be witness to it. Teddy’s gift is beautiful and I can totally relate to wanting to early gift :)

    1. Hi Amy,
      I found them at Joanns… can you believe they were in the $1 bin. There were about 5 sets of alphabet stamps in different fonts… I bought all 5 sets. What a find. However, it was quite a long time ago.
      If you make them, please send me a photo :-)
      Love Donni
