We had a magical weekend making Fairy Gardens.
Kitty decided she wanted her own, personal, Fairy Garden… one that she could move around if she wanted to. We set off for our nearest thrift shop in search of the perfect container. When she saw an old silver soup tureen, she declared that she’d found it!
Next was a trip to our nursery to pick out the plants. I was amazed at her restraint… I was oo-ing and ahhhh-ing at all the tiny snapdragons, the miniature pansies and the tiny honey flowers. Kitty shook her head at them all… I don’t want too many plants, she said. There must be a lot of room for playing! In the end she chose moss, of course, and a pretty mound of Seapinks.
Once home, she got to work making her silver soup tureen suitable for a Fairy Garden. Holes had to be punched into the bottom so that it would drain properly.
She filled her container with soil.
Then moss. We measured the diameter of the moss we’d need and she cut it from the moss flat with a sharp knife.
Carefully, she pushed her moss circle into her container.
She picked a spot for the Seapinks and, with the sharp knife, cut a hole in the moss… just the right size.
She squeezed the sides of the Seapinks container to loosen the soil inside and carefully turned the plant upside down so that it slid into her hand.
She marveled at the beautiful designs of the roots and then planted the Seapinks into her Fairy Garden.
It is quite the prettiest little Fairy Garden I’ve seen!
And, each time I see it, it looks a little different!

My children and I are planning on doing this soon (once it is warm enough for the pot to stay outside). Now I want a silver soup tureen for mine! That is gorgeous and I love Kitty’s restraint.

Her garden is so perfect! Love the container she chose. I am so glad that your contest is staying open for so long… we started a fairy garden last summer, surrounding one of our trees in the backyard, but we are covered in snow right now, so it will be a while before we can go back to it and finish it. I believe we are also going to do an indoor one, as per my daughter’s request. One can never have too many fairy gardens ;)

How creative! I love the silver soup tureen and that there’s lots of room for playing. Where did you purchase the big piece off moss?

Most big nurseries have moss in large flats. There are usually two kinds, Irish moss which is a darker green and Scottish moss which is lime green. Both are wonderful in Fairy Gardens. If you make your own Fairy Garden, be sure to enter our Fairy Garden Contest :-)

My daughter and I enjoyed looking at Kitty’s fairy garden photos! We’ve been making winter fairy homes, and now that spring is starting to arrive we are making spring fairy gardens. It is a lot of fun. We will have to enter the contest :)

the soup tureen is so perfect — such a good idea… I must visit my local thrift/antique shop soon to seek such a treasure. And the moss… I have an urn on my front porch. It had been full of moss for a year, but this fall, some squirrels stole all the moss to line a nest they built in the tree above. I couldn’t be too cross with them because I knew that soft moss was to keep their babies snug…
