We’ve been having a lot of bonfires in the backyard recently… roasting marshmallows is a frequent summer treat at the Sunny House. It’s amazing how an open fire can turn a regular day into a special occasion.
And, did you know that the charcoal left behind in the fire pit is an excellent drawing medium too? Kitty was delighted to learn that charcoal was what many of the ancient artists used when they drew their pictures on rocks in caves. And, she was even more amazed to realize that the perfectly shaped stick of charcoal she uses when she shades her pencil drawings is also just a piece of burnt wood!
Of course, when you find a piece of charcoal from the fire pit to draw with, make utterly certain that the fire is totally dead.
Charcoal washes off with a water hose just like chalk does.

I read every page you write on this blog and just want you to know that it makes me so excited for my girls growing up and being able to engage in and do even more than their 3 and 1 year old minds and bodies already do.
