Meet Mr. and Mrs. Autumn Gnome. They are on their way a gathering and are dressed in their best fall colors. Don’t you just love Mrs. Autumn Gnome’s wild hair? She gets entirely frustrated with it when she grooms it in the mornings. She thinks she’d look better with it neat and tidy. She wishes it weren’t so unruly. If only she knew that she’s perfect JUST THE WAY SHE IS.

In autumn, fairies and gnomes dress in the colors of the fall. They love the rich oranges and yellows of the fallen leaves and the warm browns of acorns and pine cones. What  fun it is for little ones to make these autumn peg people gnomes.

NOTE : For those of you who want to make these sweet darlings at home with your little ones but don’t want the hassle of gathering all the materials you’ll need, I’ve made this craft available as a kit in my shop. You can purchase the kit, including all the supplies you’ll need to make TWO gnomes and instructions, here : DIY Acorn Gnome Kit for $16.

Materials you’ll need :

  • two wooden gnome bodies
  • fluffy blue and white gnome hair and acorn hats
  • orange and yellow paint and a paint brush
  • felt strips and two little buttons
  • a tube of non-toxic glue

Let’s paint the bodies of our gnomes first, leaving the heads unpainted.

Now lets add the hair. Use the paintbrush to add a dollop of glue to the gnome’s head.

Stick on the hair… long hair for the girl and short hair for the boy. Press the wool hair firmly into the glue and leave until dry.

Now let’s stick on the acorn hat. Fill the inside of the acorn with glue.

Stick the acorn firmly onto the gnome’s head and leave it to dry completely. You may have to push the acorn onto the head a few times during the drying process as the fluffy hair tends to lift it a little and we want it to be firmly stuck down.

Paint one side of the felt belt with glue and fix it onto the gnome’s body. Lie the gnome down so that his weight is resting on the glued felt to help it stay in place. Let it dry. Add the little button by dabbing it with a little glue and fixing it in place. Let it dry.
