Weaving an Autumn Tapestry with Wool Roving

Look at this gorgeous woven autumn tapestry Kitty and I made together.

We used a vine wreath form, colorful autumn wool roving, some wool yarn and a couple of felted toadstools.

Step 1 : Make the Tree Loom

I tied off the yarn branches and roots using a simple slipknot.

Be sure to leave the roots varying lengths for a lovely organic look.

Cinch the yarn above the roots into a tree trunk by tying  them together using a separate piece of yarn.

Step 2 : Weave in the Gorgeous Autumn Colors

Divide the autumn colored yarn into long strips, about the thickness of your finger.

Weave them through the tree loom.

Over, under, over under.

The next strand is a new color and goes : Under, over, under, over.

It’s wonderful working with the warm wool.

It’s hard work to concentrate on the pattern without making a mistake… over, under, over, under… Next strand : under, over, under, over.

When the leaves are woven into place, use a strip of brown roving to needle felt the tree trunk.

And add a few nature bits like acorns at the base. We used two needle felted toadstools.

Isn’t it wonderful!

It’s hanging in pride of place above our fireplace to usher in the Fall.
