Kitty turned 11 the other day.
Poor Kitty! Her birthday is so close to Christmas that we are usually all-partied-out by the time her special day comes around. But this year we made a big effort to celebrate her birthday with a party for her and her class friends.
She decided that she wanted to have a needle felting party.
I made little green landscapes for them to work with. (I have an easy to follow tutorial on how to make these playmats here.)
I collected all of my roving scraps so that they had a kaleidoscope of colors to choose from.
They loved needle felting so much. It’s the perfect craft for eleven year olds!
At first, I sat with them and showed them the basics of needle felting but, in no time at all, they were creating their own little treasures. They took to it immediately.
I made them tea and toast with marmite and reveled in their excited, eleven-year-old chatter and beautiful, pure imaginations.
Look at what fun they had. And at the beautiful landscapes they made with toadstools, bridges and bunnies…

I love this idea for a birthday party for that age group; so soothing and fun to do something crafty and quiet as opposed to the usual ideas that surface about. They all did such a wonderful job!
