My Workspace : The Sunny House Tour

We moved into our beautiful Sunny House just over two years ago.

Living in this gorgeous home, that was built, completely, from the ground up, by my clever Good Man, has been more wonderful than we could ever have imagined. We are still pinching ourselves at our luck.

I’m thankful that we took our time to design it. So much thought went into each and every little space and now it all flows so well with the way we live our lives… it’s bright and open and sunny.

One of my favorite spaces is my workspace. It’s set into an alcove under the stairs. I have a gorgeous big desk that feels so good to work at.

I’ve collected all my precious things around me… little things that inspire me and infuse me with the creativity of the people I love.

The gorgeous silver cow skull that sits over my desk was something I found at an odd little shop with Kitty a few months ago. It had a broken horn and we nearly didn’t buy it. Don’t worry, Mom, Kitty said… I’ll fix it. And she did. She found sculpey clay that matched the silver metal the skull is made from. She fashioned a horn tip and fixed it completely. Now, it guards me as I work and wards off any (and all) negative thoughts.

I have two reminders of Africa on my desk. A collection of porcupine quills and guinea fowl feathers we collected at my Aunts vineyard in Franschhoek on our last trip home to South Africa for my brother’s wedding 4 years ago.

And a black and white watercolor painting of a zebra done by Kitty.

There are some other artworks on my desk. The Airdrie Fairy is one of my most precious things. My mom made her for Kitty using pressed flowers she and Kitty had collected on one of our trips to visit my parents in England when Kitty was two.

My mom has written on the back… “Dear Kitty, Thank you for coming to visit me and thank you for bringing your mom. These are all the flowers we collected. Can you see the fairy wings? Remember the tree where the fairies came to change their wings when they got broken? Her dress is yellow like Belle’s. She has a clover lantern and blue slippers like your Dad. Miss you lots. Love Gran.” I treasure those precious memories.

The other artwork is from my mom too. They are pictures she drew that are in a style all of her own. They are little girls. The one is a card that she wrote to my dad’s mom and dad in 1971. The other is a card she drew for me when I was a baby in 1973 that reads, ‘And the child that’s born on the Sabbath Day is fair and wise and good and gay.’ That’s me, fair and wise and good and gay.

Do you see the sweet little brown root child? Teddy made him when he was in Kindergarten. He filled his body with wheat berries and love, and sewed on the little felt leaves. I love him so much.

Kitty made me the little clay dragon for Christmas.

On the top shelf of my desk are two treasures that are very important to me. A little concrete statue of an angel and a little girl. The little girl is my cousins child, Vanilla, who passed away on her second birthday 5 years ago. It is so comforting for me to know that she is being held by angles until she is reunited with her mom and dad and sister when the time is right one day. I will give this statue to my cousin one day too but, for now, I just can’t let it go. I know I will feel it when the time has come for me to pass it on to Camilla.

This is also why the sign ‘Each new day is a blessing’ is so meaningful to me. It was on that day, 5 years ago, that I realized how fragile everything is and how lucky I am to be having this day with my precious babies and all the other people I love. Each day is a gift to be cherished.

The gorgeous felt banner in shades of peach and grey is from my Etsy friend, Faith ( Ordinary Mommy ). You should check out her shop… she has them in so many wonderful color combos and styles.

The matching felted acorns, turquoise pumpkins and felted pebbles are from The Magic Onions Shop, of course.

And then there’s the little fairy door in the wall. The kids and I made it just the other day and we’ll be showing you how later in the week. Isn’t it fun!

Thanks for coming on the tour. I hope you’ve enjoyed this little window into the treasures I’ve collected.

I’ll be showing you more of The Sunny House as time goes on.

Blessings and magic,

Donni

  1. What an extraordinanarily neat workspace. Clay is such a massy messy medium to work with that I would really have to work up the nerve to share my workspace. Yours looks very inspiring.

    1. Hi Natalie… you have made me giggle as I did spend an hour before I took the photos tidying it up :)
As mess made from creativity is often beautiful, I bet your workspace is gorgeous too.

    1. Hi Nikki, thanks for the kind words. Teddy started calling it The Sunny House when we were building it. He was 3 and got so confused with which house we were going to… the home we lived in or the home we were building… so he named it. How apt the name turned out to be :)
I see you are still doing 52 weeks in Nature… awesome! I lost momentum last year so maybe I’ll start it up again when that time of year comes around and do the last half of the year.

  2. What a treat! You have a beautiful, treasure filled home. I really envy how much light you get, that’s always a struggle in my house and one of the reasons I just finished painting all the floors white – to get as much light as possible. Can’t wait to read about the adorable fairy door too!

    1. Thanks, Cassie, it’s such a treat for you to visit :)
Yes, we have soooooo many windows and they all let in gorgeous Californian sunlight.
We painted our upstairs floors white too. Oh, how we love the white floors. I’d love to see yours :)
