We have had a most magical 2 week family vacation in Maine and Massachusetts .

Although we have been in the USA for 14 years, we haven’t traveled around this beautiful country much. My Good Man comes from New Zealand and I come from South Africa, so, whenever we’ve been able to save up enough money to travel, it’s always been home to one of our countries to see our families.

But this vacation was a little different. We are looking into relocating our family to a less urban lifestyle and wanted to see these two beautiful states.

What a gorgeous country this is!

Here are photos of our first day in Portland, Maine.

We are lucky enough to have family in Portland and Tim and Debra took us on a tour of the Portland lighthouses. Each one was more picturesque than the last and the Maine Coast was impossibly beautiful.

For lunch we had a little picnic of (did you guess it?) lobster rolls in the wildflowers and dandelions. Can you see Teddy making a very serious wish on his dandelion? You can literally see his wish coming true in the photos!

Then we did a bit of browsing in the charming, coast-inspired, shops.

We ended the afternoon with surprisingly delicious vegan and gluten-free treats.

Our conclusion : we love Portland.

Portland is a vibrant city with gorgeous shops, wonderful restaurants and amazing landmarks. But, most of all, it’s on the most magnificent coastline imaginable.

Maine rocks!

Blessings and magic,

  1. Cool! Actually, though I have been in England over 28 years, I am from Maine! Further up the state in the Lincoln area. Glad you enjoyed it. Hope you got to see one of the fabulous golden red sunsets/sunrises you can see on the coast.

    1. Hi Sandy, it’s such a small world, isn’t it. We didn’t make it to Lincoln but it looks like the higher up you go, the more beautiful it gets… if that’s even possible :)
We did see THE MOST GORGEOUS sunrises AND sunsets… and moon rises too!! Also, we stargazed! Magnificent part of the world.
      Do you ever get back?

      1. I don’t get beck very often. and nowadays it is usually for a funeral. I was there in the beginning of June for a quick journey because my brother died.
You asked Francesca how long the winters last. Last year they didn’t get the thaw in late Jan or February that they usually do. Plus the snow kept coming. So, there was still 6 feet of snow the week before Easter! It was also a long winter the year before. But when it turns to spring, it is all in one go. One week it is definitely winter and 2 weeks later it is nearly Summer! Trees bud, blossom and get leaves in a 2 or 3 week time period. So, when all the snow goes that fast, they get what is called ‘mud season’ ;-)
I totally prefer England where the daffodils start poking the tips of their leaves up at Christmas! It gives you hope to get through the windy cold weather in Jan and Feb. Spring lasts for months and months. I love it!

PS you have to ask your friends about the black flies and midges in Maine…

    1. Hi Heather, Christchurch is one of our most favorite places in New Zealand. My husband is from Auckland but, if we ever moved back, I think we’d come to the South Island. How are things in Christchurch after the earthquakes?

  2. I live in Durham, New Hampshire(but I am originally from Italy-been in the USA for 5 years now) but I work in Eliot,Maine. I love Portland and I love Maine….I have been taking teacher training in Rockport during the past year and I simply fell in love with the area too. There is everything to love there and you get used to Winters!

    1. Hi Francesca,
We didn’t make it to Eliot… next time :) But, yes… the winters are our biggest concern. How long do they really last?
