We love using the things we find in nature to decorate our home for the holidays.
There is a pine tree in our neighborhood that drops the sweetest mini pine cones. We took our basket on a walk yesterday and collected a few to make a snowy pine cone garland for our mantle.
Isn’t it wonderful?!
I’ve put together and easy, step-by-step DIY tutorial so that you can make one too.
You’ll want to pin this graphic to Pinterest so that you can find it when you are looking for it later.
Here is the tutorial with lovely big photos to help guide you through every step.
Materials :
- mini pine cones (picked up from nature or purchased here).
- white paint
- floral wire
- hemp string
- paint brush
Step 1
Give each mini pine cone a dusting of white paint.
Step 2
When the paint is dry, wrap thin floral wire inside the tynes of each pine cone. Twist the ends of the floral wire together to form a loop and trim with scissors.
Step 3
Thread hemp string through the loop you have just made with the floral wire. String each pine cone onto your garand.
Step 4
Make simple loop-knots in the end of your garland and hang it in your home. If you are lucky, your garland will fill the room with the wonderful scent of natural pine.
It looks so perfect in the Sunny House.
I have put together a kit, available in The Magic Onions Shop, that will come with EVERYTHING you need to complete this project.
If you LOVE this garland but are not the crafting type, you can purchase it in The Magic Onions Shop… in the Garland section.

I absolutely ADORE this idea!!! All the kids seem to do these days is collect all sorts of things, acorns and pinecones among their favorites! I never know what to do with all these little goodies but this is now a wonderful way to get them to use something they’ve happily collected willingly and feel like they’ve contributed to decorating the house. Thanks so much for this wonderful idea, I can’t wait to give it a try <3
Hi Sara, Same in our home… we end up with baskets and baskets of foraged goodies. I love finding beautiful ways to display them in our home :)
Would love to see yours when you are done.
