Kitty has entered that new phase in life where shopping is totally an awesome thing to do. Two years ago you couldn’t get her near a shop, especially one that had clothes in it, clothes that had seams and labels in them. Forget asking her to try anything on… never! Couldn’t be done. Now, (and I can hardly believe I’m saying this) shopping for clothes is a regularly suggested outing. We had a little giggle over it the other day as regular clothes shops (except Urban Outfiters, of course) are utterly unacceptable. No Kohls, JC Penny or Justice for Kate… uh uh… thrift stores is where it’s at. Apparently, thrift stores house amazingly awesome clothes. And it’s true too… you can’t imagine the cool things we’ve found together. It’s funny to us because it’s such a Waldorf-y way to shop… reuse, recycle, repurpose – yep, the Waldorf way is deeply ingrained.

I’ve mentioned all this about our new shopping epiphany because shopping was such a big part of our recent trip to Maine. We spent the first few days on the island and the other days in Portland and driving up the Maine Mid Coast, stopping at thrift stores whenever we saw them (our dad really is a good man to tolerate these diversions). Portland is such an awesome little city, thriving with vibe and inspiration. There’s a thrift shop on every corner and, next to it, a cute artsy shop, filled with whimsical woodlandy things. And, of course, Portland has The Holy Donut… who make the most delicious donuts we’ve ever had. They, believe it or not, are made out of mashed potato!! These donuts are so good, seriously, that it’s totally worth a trip to Portland just to get a donut (and I think we’ll actually be needing to do this soon!)

The Maine Mid Coast is spectacularly beautiful… rugged and craggy, with cute little fishing villages along the way. We feasted on lobster roles. We spent hours searching for heart shaped rocks and sea glass and came away with treasures galore. The mornings were misty and romantic and evenings gave us spectacular sunsets. Our little bnb in Belfast, ME, was charming and Kitty and Teddy enjoyed sharing a room together. Matt and I were cozy in our little loft room. One of my highlights was stumbling across a dahlia farm in Camden, ME. There were thousands of beautiful bright flowers, some as big as my head (literally!) in all shades of pretty. I can’t wait to grow dahlia’s of my own.

We love spending time together, away from the hustle and bustle of real life. One of the joys of living in New England is being so close to so many gorgeous places… life’s an adventure, that’s for sure!

Blessings and magic,

Donni

    1. It’s an awesome place to live, Francesca! Why don’t you?
We were lucky to arrive at Holy Donut just when the line was randomly short. After having one, we all decided that we would even stand in line to get a donut next time :)

  2. Be sure to stop in the next time up are up this way! House has a long way to go, but still closer to salt water than our old NH location. Note the new email address, though old ones still work.
