This is what we used to make our cute acorn ornaments…

DIY Glittery Acorn Christmas Ornament Tutorial :: www.theMagicOnions.com

Materials :

  1. glitter – in lots of cute colors
  2. acorns – picked up from the neighborhood trees
  3. glue – school glue is the easiest to work with but if you are impatient to wait for glue to dry, super glue might be your best bet
  4. string – any string will do but we love the natural appeal of hemp string
  5. scissors
  6. hot glue gun
  7. black marker – to make things easier
  8. drill – you’ll need a super small drill bit
  9. paint pallet or an old muffin tin

Can’t find acorns in your neighborhood, you can buy them on Etsy. The largest acorns are the best and ones with little woody stems are magical.

Tutorial :

Separate the acorns from the caps by pressing on acorns while holding the caps firmly in your fingers. If your acorns are green, they won’t come apart easily and you will need to leave them in a cool dry place for a few days to dry out.

DIY Glittery Acorn Christmas Ornament Tutorial :: www.theMagicOnions.com

With the acorns separated, use the black marker to number the acorns with their corresponding acorn caps so that you will know exactly which acorn fits perfectly in which cap. The numbers will help you match up the pairs. Ensure that the markings are at the top of the acorn and on the inside of the acorn cap … we don’t want to be able to see them once we have glued them back together again.

DIY Glittery Acorn Christmas Ornament Tutorial :: www.theMagicOnions.comCut the string into 6-inch lengths. We’ll make loops with this hemp string for our acorns to hang from.

Drill holes in the top of each acorn cap. Your drill bit should be double the diameter of the hemp string.

Thread the hemp string through the inside of an acorn cap and back down through the hole again, making a hanging loop. Make sure that the two ends of the hemp string on the inside of the acorn cap are not long enough to protrude past the lip of the cap.

DIY Glittery Acorn Christmas Ornament Tutorial :: www.theMagicOnions.com

With the hot glue gun, put a bit of glue onto the hemp string inside the acorn cap.DIY Glittery Acorn Christmas Ornament Tutorial :: www.theMagicOnions.com

And stick the acorn back into its cap.

You now have a perfect little acorn ornament.

We were tempted to leave our acorn ornaments natural as we thought they looks soooooo cute and could imagine how sweet our tree would look with natural acorns dotted all around it. But, the consensus, when including the children’s vote of course (damn!), was to continue with our original plans of making them spectacularly glittery. Who can pass up a chance for some sparkle and shine?

DIY Glittery Acorn Christmas Ornament Tutorial :: www.theMagicOnions.com

To keep the glitter under control, we used a recycled mini muffin tin, filling it up with many colors of wonderful glitter. I have also used a little plastic paint pallet but the dishes are a little shallow and if your kids are young, there is more potential to make a bit of a glittery mess with them. I also filled one of the cups with glue.

DIY Glittery Acorn Christmas Ornament Tutorial :: www.theMagicOnions.com

Paint an acorn with school glue, making sure not to get glue on the acorn cap!

DIY Glittery Acorn Christmas Ornament Tutorial :: www.theMagicOnions.com

Now, dip the acorn in the glitter, spreading color evenly all around the acorn.

DIY Glittery Acorn Christmas Ornament Tutorial :: www.theMagicOnions.com

Set your amazingly gorgeous acorn ornaments aside to dry completely. A nice sunny spot on a window sill will work perfectly.

If you are nervous of the glitter coming off your ornaments and showering your house with fairy dust, spray them with a coat of Polyurethane spray. This forms a protective coating over the glitter and it will not sprinkle around. We, of course, like fairy dust, so decided not to follow this step.

Hang them on your Christmas tree for some magical sparkle and shine! And just wait until your Christmas lights make them shimmer. There will be a gasp from the crowd!

Silk Toadstool Christmas Ornament DIY Tutorial

Oh my… we’ve been making these most adorable silk toadstools for our Christmas tree. Each one takes a few minutes to make and, at this rate, our tree will be laden with toadstools!

I found the silk fabric in wonderfully natural colors at Joannes Fabrics. It was on sale too!

The foam balls are from the Dollar Store and we picked up the sticks from outside.

Watch this self-explanatory  how-to video I to see how easy they are to make ::

And, please send me a photo if you make them for your tree.

Felt Gumdrop Christmas Ornaments :: DIY Tutorials :: www.theMagicOnions.com

We are having so much fun in The Sunny House with our Christmas crafting. Each day, when the kids come home from school, we set about making new ornaments for our Christmas tree. We choose fun and easy projects that aren’t too involved and Kitty and Teddy are loving this new tradition we’ve started. Today, we made felt gumdrop ornaments for our handmade Christmas tree.

Don’t you just LOVE felt balls? There are sooooooo many fun things you can do with them. Felt balls and glue will turn just about anything into an awesome ornament!

  • glue (hot glue works best)

All you do to make these wonderfully colorful Christmas ornaments is put a little glue onto each gumdrop and stick them onto the vine ball.

Of course, you can color-coorodinate, using your favorite colors to match your Christmas tree if you have a color theme going on… or you can just add a variety of bright colors for a fun rainbow look, like we did.

Cranberry Heart Ornaments :: DIY Tutorial

Cranberry Hearts Christmas Ornaments :: DIY Tutorials :: www.theMagicOnions.com

Tis the season to be jolly!

We made some beautiful cranberry heart ornaments today with Christmas music ‘jollying’ us along. They look so pretty on our rustic tree.

Teddy and I made them while Kitty made us hot chocolate with her famous recipe… 2 cups of milk, one cup of cream and half a cup of chocolate chips… melted and gently warmed in a pot on the stove.

Let me share our DIY tutorial with you so that you can make some for your own tree.

Cranberry Hearts Christmas Ornaments :: DIY Tutorials :: www.theMagicOnions.com

Materials ::

  • fresh cranberries
  • thin wire
  • Christmas ribbon
  • Christmas cheer

Cranberry Hearts Christmas Ornaments :: DIY Tutorials :: www.theMagicOnions.com

Method ::

Cut a length of wire about 8 or 9 inches long.

Thread the wire through the fresh cranberries.

Cranberry Hearts Christmas Ornaments :: DIY Tutorials :: www.theMagicOnions.com

When the wire is threaded completely with cranberries, shape it into a heart and stick the ends of each side of the wire heart into a last cranberry to complete the heart shape.

Tie it with a pretty bow to hand and admire your creativity.

We got to thinking that a garland of cranberry hearts would look wonderful too.

It’s best to space the feather butterflies randomly on the ball so they look like real butterflies have alighted upon it by chance.

We made some with only three butterflies on them and others covered in butterflies. Both look wonderfully enchanting.

Felted Acorn Ornaments :: DIY Tutorial

Felted Acorn Ornaments :: DIY Tutorial :: www.theMagicOnions.com

If you know me, you know I’m partial to felted acorns. In fact, I can thank felted acorns for giving birth to my entire business. Felted acorns were the very first handmade goodies I offered for sale in The Magic Onions Shop. This was long ago, folks, long before EVERYONE on Etsy started making felted acorns. Back when they were still a novelty.

We make felted acorns for our Christmas tree every year. Sometimes, we make them with colorful ribbon or cord. This year, we made them with hemp string. I LOVE the rustic look this hemp gives them.

Felted Acorn Ornaments :: DIY Tutorial :: www.theMagicOnions.com

If you love felted acorns as much as I do, you are in for a treat today. I’m sharing my DIY tutorial with you so that you can make some for your tree too.

Here’s what you’ll need…

Felted Acorn Ornaments :: DIY Tutorial :: www.theMagicOnions.com

Materials :

  1. felt balls in your favorite colors (find them here.).
  2. real acorn caps.
  3. hemp string (the thinnest you can find).
  4. glue (hot glue is best but if you are working with children, school glue works just as well… you just have to be more patient waiting for the glue to dry.)
  5. scissors

Method :

Step 1

First pair up all of acorn caps with your felt balls, making sure the balls fit snugly in the cap. Leave the balls in the acorn caps until you are ready to glue them together.

Step 2

Drill small holes in each acorn cap.

Gorgeous Glitter Feather Ornaments

Kitty found glitter in the craft cupboard.

“Let’s make sparkly ornaments, Mom” she said.

Just then, Teddy came in with a white goose feather… and an idea was born.

Gorgeous Glitter Feather Christmas Ornaments : www.theMagicOnions.comGorgeous Glitter Feather Christmas Ornaments : www.theMagicOnions.com

I have a stash of goose feathers that I brought out for us to use. What? Doesn’t everyone have a stash of goose feathers? Well, now you know you need one. In fact, a stash of everything is preferable. You never know when you’ll need something and it’s always best to have it on hand.

Gorgeous Glitter Feather Christmas Ornaments : www.theMagicOnions.com

We found some school glue and put down a sheet of craft paper to contain the glitter mess… yes, no matter how hard you try, glitter will get everywhere!

Gorgeous Glitter Feather Christmas Ornaments : www.theMagicOnions.comGorgeous Glitter Feather Christmas Ornaments : www.theMagicOnions.com

We put glue on each feather with a paintbrush and then doused it with a liberal sprinkling of glitter.

A little shake and your pretty feather ornament is sparkly!

After each feather had dried, we threaded a needle with thread and passed the thread through the tip of the quill to make a hanging loop to put our feathers on the Christmas tree.

But, they look so pretty loose too, so there are now a few in a white vase on the mantle looking very stylish indeed.

Isn’t Christmas fun!

Here are some other wonderful Handmade Christmas Ornament Tutorials that I think you’ll love too.
