Handmade Spring Fairies :: DIY Felt Tutorial

Spring has arrived to Southern California and we have been busy making felt spring fairies. They bring such sweet enchantment to The Sunny House.

I have made them from wool felt in pretty pastel colors and I’m happy to share the DIY tutorial with you, below. Aren’t they the sweetest!

Let me tell you about the felt I use. I think it’s vital to use the highest quality felt with all felting projects. You can buy the most beautiful wool felt at an online shop called A Child’s Dream. The owner, Debbie, has been a ‘fiber friend’ of mine for many years and I can vouch that her felt is always superb. She offers beautiful, high-quality felt in such lovely colors. My favorite of all are the organic, plant dyed felts…  there’s nothing quite as lovely as the natural hues you get from nature. I use nothing but 100% wool felt for my crafts. There really is a BIG difference between cheap felt and high quality wool felt. If you are going to spend valuable time and effort making something, you owe it to yourself , and your creations, to use the best possible materials, always. The outcome will be SO MUCH more beautiful.

Method ::

Spring Fairy :: DIY Felt Tutorials :: www.theMagicOnions.com

1.  Draw a stencil on a piece of paper to help cut the felt. My fairies are 2 inches wide by 2 inches long. You will double the stencil for the front and back of the fairies dress.

2.  Cut out the stencil and pin it to the felt. Cut around the stencil to cut the perfect shape from the felt.

3. Unpin the paper, leaving the felt dress.

Spring Fairy :: DIY Felt Tutorials :: www.theMagicOnions.com

4. Fold the dress in half and snip a tiny hole in the middle for the neck.

5. Fold a pipe cleaner so that it is the right length for the arms (about 1 inch each) and joining at the neck. Twist the neck pieces together.

6. Position the pipe cleaner arms inside the dress and the neck through the neck slit.

Spring Fairy :: DIY Felt Tutorials :: www.theMagicOnions.com

7. Sew the sleeves of the dress together with a needle and thread. Sew the seam to about half way down the length of the dress.

8. Use the sharp ends of the scissors to carefully make a hole in the felt ball. Put a little glue onto the top of the neck pipe cleaner wire and insert it into the hole in the felt ball. Her head is now in place. Use glue to stick on the small wood beads for her hands.

9. Use glue to stick on the wool roving for her hair. Cut a long, thin piece of felt for a headband. Use glue to stick it in place. Use needle and thread to sew a hanging thread through her felt ball head.

Spring Fairy :: DIY Felt Tutorials :: www.theMagicOnions.com

10. Use glue to stick the feather butterfly onto her back for her wings.

11. Use glue to stick a bead or crystal onto the front of her dress.

12. Hang your pretty spring fairies somewhere special.

I’ve picked a few bare branches from my peach tree to put in handmade pretty yarn mason-jar vase from a DIY tutorial a few years ago. My felt fairies are dancing on them with joy. I’ve also put a few felt blossoms on the branches and some additional feather butterflies. They all look so beautiful on my windowsill.

Valentine's Day Flowers :: Felt Tutorial :: www.theMagicOnions.com

Felt Flowers :: DIY Tutorial

Look what I have sitting on my desk.

Valentine's Day Flowers :: Felt Tutorial :: www.theMagicOnions.com

Okay, yes, there is a kitten… but I’m talking about the gorgeous felt flowers… the pretty poppies.

Valentine's Day Flowers :: Felt Tutorial :: www.theMagicOnions.comValentine's Day Flowers :: Felt Tutorial :: www.theMagicOnions.comValentine's Day Flowers :: Felt Tutorial :: www.theMagicOnions.com

I made them to brighten the Sunny House. Aren’t they wonderful?!

Here’s how…

Materials ::

A word about the felt. I think it’s vital to use the highest quality felt with all felting projects. I get my wool felt from a gorgeous shop called Felt On The Fly. The owner, Janet, has been an Etsy friend of mine for many years and I can vouch that her felt is superb. She has every color imaginable… do yourself a favor and check out her shop. I use nothing but 100% wool felt for my crafts. There really is a BIG difference between cheap felt and high quality wool felt. If you are going to spend valuable time and effort making something, you owe it to yourself , and your creations, to use the best possible materials for a couple of dollars more. The outcome will be SO MUCH more beautiful. Trust me on this. Get high quality wool felt from Felt On The Fly.

Valentine's Day Flowers :: Felt Tutorial :: www.theMagicOnions.com

Step 1 ::

Cut a heart out of paper, about two inches big.

Pin it to the felt to use as a stencil.

Use sharp scissors to cut a perfect heart from the felt. Repeat until you have FOUR identical felt hearts.

Valentine's Day Flowers :: Felt Tutorial :: www.theMagicOnions.com

Step 2 ::

Arrange the hearts in a circle, overlapping slightly, so that they look like petals of a flower.

Use hot glue to stick them together where they overlap. Be careful with the glue… we don’t want it to show.

Valentine's Day Flowers :: Felt Tutorial :: www.theMagicOnions.com

Step 3 ::

Cut a long strip of brown wool felt, about 3 inches long and half an inch wide.

Use sharp scissors to cut small incisions in the brown felt. Incisions should stop about half the width of the felt so that it has a fringed look.

Valentine's Day Flowers :: Felt Tutorial :: www.theMagicOnions.com

Step 4 ::

Measure the fringed brown strip of felt so that it can fit around the felt ball. Trim it so that it does not overlap.

Put hot glue along the bottom (uncut) side of the fringed brown felt strip and stick it around the circumference  of the felt ball.

Valentine's Day Flowers :: Felt Tutorial :: www.theMagicOnions.com

Step 5 ::

With hot glue, stick the felt ball/fringe to the center of the petals.

Valentine's Day Flowers :: Felt Tutorial :: www.theMagicOnions.com

Step 6 ::

Turn the flower over and use one point of a pair of sharp scissors to make a hole in the back of the flower. Be firm in making this hole, but please be careful as if your hand slips you’ll can hurt yourself badly.

Valentine's Day Flowers :: Felt Tutorial :: www.theMagicOnions.com

Step 7 ::

Put a little hot glue onto one end of the floral wire and insert it into the hole in the back the flower.

Voila! A pretty flower for your Valentine. Make a few more for a bouquet.

Cranberry Hearts Christmas Ornaments :: DIY Tutorials :: www.theMagicOnions.com

Cranberry Heart Ornaments :: DIY Tutorial

Cranberry Hearts Christmas Ornaments :: DIY Tutorials :: www.theMagicOnions.com

Tis the season to be jolly!

We made some beautiful cranberry heart ornaments today with Christmas music ‘jollying’ us along. They look so pretty on our rustic tree.

Teddy and I made them while Kitty made us hot chocolate with her famous recipe… 2 cups of milk, one cup of cream and half a cup of chocolate chips… melted and gently warmed in a pot on the stove.

Let me share our DIY tutorial with you so that you can make some for your own tree.

Cranberry Hearts Christmas Ornaments :: DIY Tutorials :: www.theMagicOnions.com

Materials ::

  • fresh cranberries
  • thin wire
  • Christmas ribbon
  • Christmas cheer

Cranberry Hearts Christmas Ornaments :: DIY Tutorials :: www.theMagicOnions.com

Method ::

Cut a length of wire about 8 or 9 inches long.

Thread the wire through the fresh cranberries.

Cranberry Hearts Christmas Ornaments :: DIY Tutorials :: www.theMagicOnions.com

When the wire is threaded completely with cranberries, shape it into a heart and stick the ends of each side of the wire heart into a last cranberry to complete the heart shape.

Tie it with a pretty bow to hand and admire your creativity.

We got to thinking that a garland of cranberry hearts would look wonderful too.

Gorgeous Glitter Feather Christmas Ornaments : www.theMagicOnions.com

Gorgeous Glitter Feather Ornaments

Kitty found glitter in the craft cupboard.

“Let’s make sparkly ornaments, Mom” she said.

Just then, Teddy came in with a white goose feather… and an idea was born.

Gorgeous Glitter Feather Christmas Ornaments : www.theMagicOnions.comGorgeous Glitter Feather Christmas Ornaments : www.theMagicOnions.com

I have a stash of goose feathers that I brought out for us to use. What? Doesn’t everyone have a stash of goose feathers? Well, now you know you need one. In fact, a stash of everything is preferable. You never know when you’ll need something and it’s always best to have it on hand.

Gorgeous Glitter Feather Christmas Ornaments : www.theMagicOnions.com

We found some school glue and put down a sheet of craft paper to contain the glitter mess… yes, no matter how hard you try, glitter will get everywhere!

Gorgeous Glitter Feather Christmas Ornaments : www.theMagicOnions.comGorgeous Glitter Feather Christmas Ornaments : www.theMagicOnions.com

We put glue on each feather with a paintbrush and then doused it with a liberal sprinkling of glitter.

A little shake and your pretty feather ornament is sparkly!

After each feather had dried, we threaded a needle with thread and passed the thread through the tip of the quill to make a hanging loop to put our feathers on the Christmas tree.

But, they look so pretty loose too, so there are now a few in a white vase on the mantle looking very stylish indeed.

Isn’t Christmas fun!

Here are some other wonderful Handmade Christmas Ornament Tutorials that I think you’ll love too.

Child-Made Nativity Set

Last year, my children spent so many hours making the most delightful nativity set from wood, felt and other natural materials.

I can’t tell you how much joy it brought us to bring this set out again this year.

We remembered so many sweet and funny stories from when we made it.

Kitty laughed as she admitted how angry she felt that her cow didn’t look more like a cow (it was an acorn that she painted in cow splotches) … and today, she couldn’t think why she fussed so much because ‘It looks completely like a cow!’ she exclaimed.

It has reminded us that there is SO MUCH value in handmade.

 Magic Sponsor Feature

Who are ‘Natural Kids’?

We are a group of artisans from around the world who share a love for handcrafting eco friendly & all-natural toys, clothing, decor and more for kids, and kids at heart.

Their Mission :

We are committed to offering alternatives to mass produced, plastic toys and we share a love for open-ended tools to help kids discover what is new and interesting in the world. We believe that it is best for children’s enviroment and what they wear to be natural and safe.

Their products :

You will find many  items that are great for the holidays as well as inspired by the seasons. In our diverse shops of our team members you will find wonderful items for babies and kids of all ages. Many of our sellers pride themsleves on offering open ended items for both boys and girls.

Donni : Why eco-friendly is important?

Kelly (from Mud Hollow):

I believe that searching out eco-friendly goods, especially toys and products for children, is critical if we want to pass on a beautiful planet to future generations. Kids outgrow toys very quickly, leaving piles of plastic behind. When plastic toys break, it can be challenging to fix them, yet the plastic will remain for generations in the the trash heaps. I sincerely believe that toys should be made to withstand play for generations, heirlooms handed down to grandchildren and beyond, reducing the amount of waste generated in today’s world. When they are eventually no longer wanted, toys and products made in an eco-conscious way will return to the earth happily, leaving no trace that they were ever present, and not harming the beautiful world as they decompose. We have already lost too many species to pollution and habitat loss, we must do everything possible to ensure that we do not cause more damage in the buying of, crafting of, and disposal of, our products.

Donni : How did your business start?

Amos (from ApplenAmos)

Back in 2007 our little man Henry was born. With a strong desire to be a stay at home mama, I decided to cash out my 401k and leave my job. We got by for awhile but soon the money was dwindling and I decided to get a job, that’s then the economy tankedand I could not find work.

While I was home, in an effort to save money, I learned to sew, bake, can and make wood toys for Henry.
With a need to create and put food on the table as well as still stay at home to raise my boy- a tiny seed started to take root and Apple n Amos was born. We have never looked back since.

Now fast forward a few years, Henry is now in school and we find ourselves taking care of our newest member, Baby Amelia. It is so much fun creating all new toys for her and then to have them take fruit on our store.

Donni : Why is handmade important to so many moms?

Sara (from Woolies) :

Handmade items are special in so many ways. We have a rather large collection of handmade toys from around the globe – each one, besides being all natural (safe for the earth and kids), has such a wonderful personality and charm. The maker’s mark shines through each one.

Donni : What is your favorite item in your shop right now?

Wendy (BirchLeaf Designs) :

My favorite creations right now are wee Faerie skirts. They are so incredibly beautiful and fun to make! The colors are deep and rich and when I sew these, or prayer flags, I like to envision each color glowing brightly in my body, balancing and cleansing each of my chakras. At the same time, I also send off a little healing prayer and lots of love into each silk as it passes through the sewing machine, so that it may pass onto its new owner.

Donni : Why are you passionate about toys that are made from natural materials?

Becca (from Mama West Wind) :

Simple, beautiful toys that are made from natural materials inspire children to be imaginative. Children are natural storytellers, just listen to any 3 year old spin a tale, it comes so easy to them. I love that my dolls & the toys of my talented teammates help encourage that love of story & creativity.
