Leaves

Gorgeous leaves. A pallet of nature. Brown’s of every shade. Wet earth. This is winter in Southern California.

I’m so grateful for our mild winter where our days are crisp and clear and we wear jeans and a sweater and the occasional scarf.

Tomorrow, though, we are going to spend the day in the snow. We are SO excited. The forecast in Big Bear, an hour and a half away, is for snow all day long. We have borrowed snow gear and sleds and are all set to have a wonderful white winters day.

I’ll be sharing snow photos soon.

Blessings and magic,

Pine Cone Halloween Crafts

Are you getting ready for Halloween?

At the Sunny House, our rose bushes are draped in spider web, there is a carved pumpkin on the front steps and few mini-skeletons hanging from the mailbox (Teddy is our Halloween decorator!)

And, of course, we dug out our Pine Cone Spider and our Pine Cone Fairy to hang in the tree.

You’d think we are ready for the big night but no, neither children have decided what they’ll be yet. It is our tradition to play Halloween like this… we change our minds a million times and it’s always a mad rush on-the-day to find appropriate things to wear for our only-just-decided-upon costumes. That’s how we roll!

Here are our tutorials on how to make these fun Halloween decorations :

Weaving an Autumn Tapestry with Wool Roving

Look at this gorgeous woven autumn tapestry Kitty and I made together.

We used a vine wreath form, colorful autumn wool roving, some wool yarn and a couple of felted toadstools.

Step 1 : Make the Tree Loom

I tied off the yarn branches and roots using a simple slipknot.

Be sure to leave the roots varying lengths for a lovely organic look.

Cinch the yarn above the roots into a tree trunk by tying  them together using a separate piece of yarn.

Step 2 : Weave in the Gorgeous Autumn Colors

Divide the autumn colored yarn into long strips, about the thickness of your finger.

Weave them through the tree loom.

Over, under, over under.

The next strand is a new color and goes : Under, over, under, over.

It’s wonderful working with the warm wool.

It’s hard work to concentrate on the pattern without making a mistake… over, under, over, under… Next strand : under, over, under, over.

When the leaves are woven into place, use a strip of brown roving to needle felt the tree trunk.

And add a few nature bits like acorns at the base. We used two needle felted toadstools.

Isn’t it wonderful!

It’s hanging in pride of place above our fireplace to usher in the Fall.
