We’ve had a sad time at the Sunny House.

We said goodby to our Mama Bunny last week. We cried and hugged her and thanked her for all the gifts she has given us… She was our first family pet. We remembered how excited we had been when, on Kitty’s 5th Birthday, we had found her waiting for us in the living room with a big red bow tied around her cage. We smiled at how beautiful it had felt to cuddle a rabbit for the first time. We remembered how we had hated to see her in her small hutch and that we had agreed to let her loose in the back yard. How happy she had been to be free. We laughed at how mad I’d become when she ate all of my newly planted flowers. We remembered when she had appeared one day with a teeny tiny little baby in tow. How she had let us be a part of nursing him. How she had taught him to love us too. We remembered all of these beautiful things she has given us over the years as we laid her to rest in the grave in the garden.

Kitty has tended her grave daily, dusting off the gravestone and making sure the little vase is full of fresh roses. We marvel at how Baby Bunbuns is never very far from his moms grave… we often see him nestled peacefully in the cool soil next to her stick cross.

Many of you loved this story of Mama BunBuns and Baby BunBuns.

And this update where you can see them nursing.

As Kitty’s gravestone reads… “Bunbuns, RIP… we love you”

Blessings and magic,

Donni

  1. I’m sorry that your lovely bunny has died. I really enjoyed reading about her and her baby to my children. She was very loved and she always looked like she knew how lucky she was.

  2. Very sad to have to say good bye to bunnies you love.
Maybe you can start a new thing for Baby Bunbuns. We used to have a birthday party for the bunny rabbit. My son’s friends would come round with a carrot or something like that for ‘Danny’. We would have little cakes shaped like bunnies or with pictures of bunnies or carrots on top. I can’t remember everything else. I am sure you could come up with a good party!

  3. I’m so sorry to hear about your loss. I enjoyed reading the Bunbun stories, you could make them into a book. It’s a sad time for children (and Mama’s too) but I’m sure you are all holding the dear memories close to your hearts.

ps. Your painted brick reminds me of our garden, as 3 of our goldfish have passed on recently. :o(

  4. Aw, so sweet! I had a few rabbits growing up and loved keeping them. I grew very attached to our pets and was very upset when something happened to them. We got a couple rabbits earlier this year and they’re nothing like I remember as a child! Maybe because we got them as adults? Anyway, we often call them “bun buns,” too. :) What lovely memories you have with your family.

    1. Thanks, Karla. It’s so sad when a family pet passes away. But she brought us so much joy that we know how lucky were are to have had her :-)

  5. I am so sorry for your loss. We lost our bunny last year and not a day goes by when I don’t think of him. They are the sweetest creatures; so small to bring so much joy. I’ll be thinking of you.

    1. Thanks for your kind words, Cassi… who would think we could feel so close to bunnies?? Oh my… they are just the sweetest.

  6. Oh no! I’m so sad to hear this. I truly often think about mama bunny and bun buns as I was so touched by their nursing story. Thank you again for sharing…….she will be missed!

    1. Thank you for your kind words, Kim… she touched so many with her nursing. People still can’t believe that she let us be a part of it with us… precious experiences :-)

  7. I am so very sorry for your heartbreaking loss. This is my first visit to your blog, but we too have a bun, whom we love with all our hearts, & I can’t imagine losing him. They are such wonderful, amazing, sweet, funny little critters, & when you combine those huge personalities with that warm, soft, sweet smelling fur, the result is just… incredibly endearing. They just bring out the best in us, & wrap us around their cute little tails! I’m sorry she is unable to munch her way through your flowers, any more, but so glad she left you with such sweet memories.

    1. Hi Carla,
Thank you so much for your heartfelt comment. I would never have guessed how much part of a family a bunny can be. They are so very sweet. I’m glad you have experienced bunny-love too :-)
      Blessings and magic,
